Authentic Over Aesthetic: My Journey as a Pilates Instructor

There was a time when I thought I had to look or act a certain way to be taken seriously as an instructor.

I thought I had to have the perfect social media feed, always know the right thing to say, wear what everyone else was wearing, and somehow make my life look effortless. It felt like there was this unspoken checklist of what a Pilates instructor should be.

The truth is, I've never really fit into that.

At first, I saw that as something I needed to fix. Now I see it as one of my biggest strengths.

I've realized that people aren't looking for perfect. They're looking for someone who makes them feel comfortable. Someone who understands that life is messy and that movement should meet you where you are, not where you think you should be. I don't want my studio to feel intimidating. I don't want anyone walking in wondering if they're fit enough, flexible enough, or experienced enough. I want them to know they belong the second they walk through the door.

There doesn’t need to be a mold to fit into, a pilates princess aesthetic, a matching set. None of that is what matters. What matters is moving your body and making space for yourself in ways you didn't think you could. That is how this journey started for me, and how I want to help clients.

The phrase mind body connection gets used a lot in the wellness world, but what does it actually mean? To me, it's the practice of paying attention. It's noticing your breath instead of rushing through it. It's recognizing when your shoulders are carrying stress before they start to ache. It's understanding that how you think, feel, and move are all connected. The mind-body connection has helped me tremendously. I would love to share it with you.
